E-Sports: How It Affects The Youth And What To Look Out For

Today, everything is at people’s fingertips. People are one Google search away from every vice on the planet. They could read up on how to drink ‘safely’, conspiracy theories on how tobacco is good for you and how gambling is one of the easiest ways to make money; none of which are close to true. The internet is a pretty dangerous place for children especially since gambling and gaming have moved online.

Gambling is not just slot machines and table games nowadays, it has expanded to much more than just the conventional games available before. The world of the internet brought with it something that revolutionised the gambling sector: e-sports. E-sports refers to games that are played by multiple people all over the world that can be bet on. It is a sector that shows quite a lot of promise in the gambling sector and there is a possibility of big winnings in the years to come.

E-sports games are more accessible now than ever before. Try can be played on phones, laptops and tablets. The problem with e-sports is that people do not even realise they are betting or gambling before it is too late. This is further made confusing because of the fact that people can pay for simple things like lives, skins or bonuses in games and think that it is an investment rather than gambling.

The youth are easily drawn into this because of easy access to debit and prepaid cards. Most e-sports games have affordable premium membership packs and this makes it even more attractive for them. This can lead to gambling on cool video game swag like ‘skins’ or ‘bonuses’ or in a later stage, join e-sports betting sites and gamble. This can lead to serious problems like stress, anxiety, depression and problem gambling issues in later stages of life.

There are three main points to keep in mind while talking about gambling among the youth.

  1. Gambling is just like other risky behaviour: Most people, including parents, are nonchalant to their children spending money on video games or fantasy sports because they do not realise that this could potentially lead to more risky behaviour like gambling for real money later on in life. Just because they are not doing drugs, drinking or smoking, they are not engaging in any vices.
  2. Many Teens Already Have Gambling issues: There are a lot of young people who are already spending money on gambling. The easy access and low budget of fantasy sports can trigger a much serious gambling issue later in adulthood.
  3. Teens are adults in a few years: If people are not careful, these teens who are betting bonuses, lives and skins on fantasy sports games can easily shift to real money gambling because teens grow up to be adults pretty fast.

Why Gambling Education Is Important

Gambling Education

Gambling is a pastime for a lot of people. There are a large number of people who prefer gambling over other entertainment venues like shopping malls, the movies, going to a play, music festivals etc. However, there are also downsides to gambling. Even though gambling is allowed only among adults, there is a growing number of youngsters, especially teenagers entering adulthood, who are attracted to and often get addicted to gambling. Therefore it is very important to educate the youth about the dangers of gambling.

 How To Identify Student Gamblers

There are subtle tell tale signs that point to gambling addiction or an onset of the same in someone. This can be easily identified by people close to the student, like peers, friends, parents and even teachers. Some of these are listed below.

  1. Low Attendance: Most of the gambling venues are quite away from schools and educational institutions, and teens who are actively gambling would regularly miss class. So a person who is regularly missing might be a likely suspect. However, it could be some other vice that the student might have picked up, so it is important that the parents or teachers or whoever notices it have a mature conversation about it with them.
  2. Money Problems: If a student seems to have more money than they can possibly have, or constantly asks around for money, it could be a sign of them getting into a gambling addiction. However, it is important to note that this is not definitive of any vice and is just a symptom of one.
  3. Sudden Drop in Grades: A sudden drop in grades of a student could be symptomatic of a depressive episode, but combined with money problems and low attendance it could mean that the student is involved in some sort of illegal activity, one of which could be gambling.
  4. Change in company: If a student suddenly starts hanging out with a new set of friends, or if they completely isolate themselves, there is a chance that the student might be going through something internally or they could be gambling, depending on what they are up to. All of these signs may seem vague, but to a person who knows them completely, it could make sense.

What To Do

Sit down and have a mature conversation with the person you think could be a problem gambler. Give them a free environment to open up and admit their fault and whatever you do, do not try to punish them for it. Having a negative emotion attached to a negative thing they want to change could push them deeper into the vice and not pull them out of it. Try to make sure that they understand what went wrong, what mistake they made and help them recover from it, because positive emotions trump negative emotions when it comes to change.

Gambling Among The Youth: How Teachers & Parents Can Help

Gambling is fun, but it is also dangerous if you do not know what you are doing. There is no country in the world where gambling is legal for minors. However, there is a form of gambling that is legal because there is no regulation for it in almost any country. This gambling is available for e-sports.

There are a lot of games where it is possible to trade video game swag like ‘bonuses’, ‘skins’ and ‘lives’ and there are platforms to do so. These platforms are being used to gamble for these things based on who wins and loses. This is the textbook definition of gamlbing and is becoming  a serious issue among the youth, and a growing concern among the parents.

One of the major obstacles that need to be tackled is the age limit. There is no official age limit for most of the e-sports games available nowadays. Games like Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds (popularly called PUBG), Call of Duty (COD), League of Legends, Free Fire, Dota 2, Valorant etc. do not have age restrictions for the players. This means that anyone with an internet connection and little money can gamble. It is the job of educators to ensure that kids these days know the harmful impacts of gambling.

So how can parents make sure that children do not fall to the vice of gambling so early in their life? One of the best ways is controlling the money that they get. If the children are indeed betting, they need a source of money because they cannot make money on their own without turning at least 17. This means that controlling their money flow can help control their gambling issue. However, not all teens who spend on fantasy sports are gambling their money away. Some of them just want to experience the game fully and for that they may ask for a premium membership of the game. As long as the parents have supervision over their bankroll, they should be fine.

There are a few tell tale signs you can use to identify if a minor is gambling in e-sports. A few of these are listed below.

  • Unexplained Absences: If a child is frequently absent from school or from the house, and does not give any logical explanation, they may be gambling. It could be something else too, so it is definitely a good idea to start a healthy conversation on the topic.
  • Sudden Behavior Changes: This is one of the most noticeable signs when something is wrong and needs a formal discussion with immeduare effect.
  • Money Problems: If a teen shows signs of having more money than usual, or seems to have money problems often, they might be spending money unwisely.
